   Hello! My name is Seth Margolis and this is the story of my family's best Summer, the Summer of 1966 that we spent at Spring Lodge. The story includes my Dad, Murray; my Mom, Rochelle; my sister, Hildarose (age 3) and me (age 6).

  In the late Spring of 1966, my father had just closed his Queens jewelry store. The business had suffered from a break-in a few months earlier and my Dad was looking for something new. Then he saw an ad for a bungalow colony in Monroe that was looking for someone to run the concession for the Summer and so he made an appointment to check it out. I still remember going up there the first time. For my sister and I, this was exciting. It would be the first
(and ultimately only) time our family would go away on an
extended vacation. For my parents, it was a tense time. They were looking for a way to make ends meet with two little kids to care for. We had actually looked at two opportunities that day. I remember one offered an apartment behind the luncheonette, which my folks didn't like. The one we all liked was Spring Lodge run by Mr Bellack.

  My Mom recounted to me that Mr. Bellack was very generous in his offer. Perhaps knowing my parents' financial position, he provided the luncheonette and an apartment across the street. If at the end of the Summer my parents made a profit, they would pay him the agreed rent. If they didn't make a profit, they wouldn't have to pay. Needless to say, this was a safe bet for Mr. Bellack because the luncheonette was profitable.

  My parents also learned a lot about the restaurant business. My Dad has repeated the story over the years how when he first started the luncheonette and was making burgers by hand from ground beef bought from the supermarket. This didn't work out so well. Because the patty would use a lot of beef and just shrivel and become unsatisfactory. This was years before Costco was created. They then were introduced to a local restaurant distributor who. They asked him about the burger situation and he responded, "How many patties per pound do you want?" I forget what my Dad selected but he told me that once he started using those patties, the burgers didn't shrivel and tasted good.

  Most of my memories are very cloudy as to the specifics of my time. I remember playing at the lodge. I remember arts and crafts in camp and I remember being called to the telephone over the PA system and hearing the music from the jukebox at night as I would try to get to sleep.

  In this video you can spot our family dog in the beginning scene of the casino area. His name was Tanne. You will spot me easily in the Clam Bake scene as the blonde kid in the black and white referee shirt. My Mom was sporting the Beatle haircut that Summer. Since my Dad was behind the camera most of the time, the only scene he appears is with my Mom at the Clam Bake.My family has always wished that we had a chance to return to Spring Lodge. However, by the Spring of 1967, my Dad had taken a job with Macy's and could not take Summers off. So, the Summer of '66 would always remain as the single best Summer our family had.
